Fremantle were able to deny Melbourne a single score from stoppage on a day that saw them emerge as 92-point victors in Alice Springs.

The Demons kicked the first two goals of the game before Fremantle took total control of the contest, booting 22 goals in an afternoon that is the biggest score under senior coach Justin Longmuir (141).

“The scorecard says it was really impressive. I thought we executed the plan really well and probably for the first time this year all our phases of the game have come together and have really clicked for a long period of time,” Longmuir said in his post-match media conference.

“I think our players were confident that our best footy was good enough, but to put a four-quarter performance in like that really shows what we can do when we sustain it.”

Fremantle kicked 11 goals in the first half, the first time the Club has achieved that since round one of 2019 when Freo defeated the Kangaroos by 82 points.

When questioned about the combination of playing both Sean Darcy and Luke Jackson in the same team, Longmuir was quick to stand firm on his belief in the pair.

“I don’t really care what everyone else thinks,” Longmuir said.

“People want to be sensationalists and be the first to say it’s not working and this and that, but the fact is last year when they both played and had continuity it worked, and we haven’t had that continuity this year.

“So as much as everyone thinks you can just click your fingers and pieces fall into place, it takes a little bit of time for Luke to find his way down forward and be comfortable playing that role again. It doesn’t happen in one week.

“Sean’s in his second game back and he’s only going to get better as well, but he covered the ground really well and looks really strong in the ruck.

“Before he got injured midway through last year, he was probably the second-best ruck in the competition behind (Max) Gawn, and Jacko was doing a great job for us forward.

“I think it can work and I’ve said that all along, and today was a little bit more evidence to say that it can and will.

The 92-point margin is the biggest win the Club has recorded since round 23, 2023 against West Coast.

Fremantle will now enjoy a well-deserved round 13 bye week before returning to face the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium in round 14 on Saturday 15 June.
