The Club’s 2024 Len Hall Tribute Game will recognise the significant role Australia played in East Timor’s journey to independence.
Warrant Officer Class One Anthony Hogan will recite the Ode, a man who has served his country for 35 years as part of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps.
Despite his longevity within the Defence Force, Hogan said he feels privileged to serve his country and honour those who have done the same.
“ANZAC Day for all serving and ex-serving members is a great time of reflection of the sacrifice and loss,” Hogan said.
“Primarily today the focus is on the ANZAC tradition, but also the East Timor veterans of which I am.
“As the Regimental Sergeant Major of the 10th Light Horse Regiment it is my privilege to both support the activity and the Len Hall family, as well as recite the Ode on behalf of the serving and ex-serving ADF members.
“The Ode has significant impact of the ADF both serving and ex serving, family and friends.
“It is an opportunity for self-reflection about the sacrifices made by the ADF and for the families in support of those in operational service both current and in the past as well.”
Notably, the deployment of the International Force East Timor (INTERFET) from 1999 to 2000 stands as Australia's most extensive peacekeeping endeavour to date and marks its largest military deployment overseas since the Vietnam War.
The very first Len Hall Tribute Game was played in 1996, with Saturday night at Optus Stadium marking the 27th time we have commemorated the Anzac Spirit.
“Operational service is a privilege,” Hogan said.
“It is both demanding to the individual and more importantly to the families, but again it is an honour to serve the country in whatever capacity and whatever role across the ADF.
“My individual experience, I’ve had the privilege to serve in a number of operations and I have only just returned from 12 months in South Sudan working with the United Nations."
Football fans will also have the opportunity to donate to the RSL at the game, with the Club raising funds for the Anzac appeal.
