Caleb Serong has labelled this pre-season as the hardest he’s worked since joining the Club.
The reigning Doig Medallist is entering his fifth season at Fremantle and is looking forward to seeing the group put the pre-season’s hard work into practise as training ramps up ahead of Fremantle’s clash with Brisbane in round one.
“It’s been a big pre-season, this time of year you always start looking forward to games and not running anymore,” the 22-year-old told Triple M Perth.
“We’ve had a big 80-minute hit-out on Saturday, and we’ll have another 100 minutes this week, so we are pretty much getting into the thick of it now."
Serong is coming off a terrific 2023 season, with the young midfielder earning his first All Australian jacket to accompany his Doig Medal win.
However, the midfielder believes this pre-season the team is pushing each other harder than they have before.
“It’s the hardest I’ve found training in the pre-seasons I’ve had so far, the level and the standards have gone up and it’s really physical,” Serong said.
“If we got to round one and there hasn’t been that level of competitiveness and physicality, we are going to be behind the eight-ball, so you need to push the boundaries a little bit."
The 80-game player made note of dual Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe’s pre-season spent training back in the midfield during recent match simulations.
“It’s been great to see him get a bit of continuity out there on the track, he’s getting back to what we know he can do around the footy,” Serong said.
“He’s a beast inside and allowing him to just go to work and simplify it and play that inside mid role has been really good for him.
“Running out alongside him you know the teams always going to be better with him out there.
“It’s exciting, we’ve got a few more weeks now for him to keep building and then hit the ground running round one.”
