Walyalup’s forwards jumped out of the blocks to apply immediate scoreboard pressure on St Kilda in their Indigenous Round clash at Walyalup Oval on Sunday afternoon.
The hot start saw Walyalup kick three goals in the first ten minutes of the game to help set up a commanding 24-point win over the Saints.
Hayley Miller and Gabby O‘Sullivan kicked two goals apiece, while Aine Tighe and Ange Stannett joined the party with one each.
Miller delivered a captain’s performance with 13 disposals, five score involvements and four tackles to go with her two majors.
“It was nice to get on the scoreboard, but it was nice as a forward line and as a group to feel like we were working well together,” Miller said.
“Goals only come from a lot of good work up the ground, I know one of mine came off a Roxy Roux rundown tackle.
“It was nice to play some good footy today, but also play some good team footy together.”
Walyalup’s total of six goals on Sunday was the Club’s highest so far this season.
Miller joked that the quick scoring had led to some errant celebrations, with two cases of friendly fire between teammates.

“There were a few celebrations gone wrong out there!” Miller said.
“Maybe we haven’t kicked enough goals to figure out the celebrations.
“I think Aine got Gabby in the throat in the first quarter so we had a bit of a laugh about that and then I wanted to thank Gabby for the goal I took off her when she had the free kick…and I copped one in the face!
“We were able to have a bit of fun out there today, so we were able to laugh at it and then get back to work.”
Adding to Walyalup’s forwardline mix against the Saints was Club debutant Serena Gibbs who narrowly missed two set shots, and provided good pressure in Walyalup’s front half.
A versatile tall, Gibbs was traded to Walyalup in the off-season after playing six games for Carlton between 2021 and 2022.
“She has sacrificed a lot to be here, she has moved across the country and had to work super hard to make her debut today,” Miller said.
“I’m super proud of the work she has put in to make that happen.
“Unfortunately, a couple of setshots didn’t quite go her way but you only get those setshots from the work that you are doing around the ground.
“She took some great marks and had a strong chase down tackle which was incredible.
“Serena has worked really hard as a back and then was thrown forward and that can be difficult sometimes, but she did that really well today.”
