After spending a week in Melbourne for back-to-back away fixtures, Fremantle will make the trip back home to Perth full of pride following a seven-point win over Richmond at Ikon Park.
In a game that had momentum swings in favour of each team, Freo managed to hold off a fast-finishing Tigers outfit to turn their form around after a disappointing loss against Essendon in round 4.
Finishing her game with 17 disposals, five score involvements and a goal, skipper Hayley Miller highlighted the importance of bonding as a team while travelling.
“It’s always good when you can spend that much time together, we do a lot of team-bonding post-game called ‘Mafia’, it’s great to have all the girls there and spend a lot of time together," Miller said.
“We did a hub here two seasons ago and we weren’t allowed to go out and do anything so this time it was just really nice to enjoy Melbourne and what it’s got to offer.”
Key forward Aine Tighe has enjoyed a standout start to season 8, booting six goals in five games and taking 30 marks, which currently ranks as the second-most in the competition.
Tighe spoke post-match about the team’s drive to put in a good performance against Richmond.
“I think for us it was really important for us to come out and put in a solid performance, especially after last weekend we were very disappointed. I’m just delighted for the girls to just dig in, show a bit of grit and come out on the winning side,” Tighe said.
“We were saying just after the game it’s the 1-21 (listed players) and the 1-31 that are pushing us on, so for everyone to just play their role, to go out there and execute today was unbelievable.
Recording her third win as senior coach, Lisa Webb said she challenged the playing group during the week to bring ‘grit and fight’ after losing two key players, Ebony Antonio and Kiara Bowers, to injury prior to the match.
“I’m really proud of this win, it’s been a fantastic week,” Webb said
“Obviously we lost a couple of important players to us and I really challenged the girls this week with that grit and fight and I couldn’t be more proud with the performance they put out there today.
“Half the team will head back (to Perth), and the rest of the team will stay for the grand final. We’ve got a bit longer of a break this time around and obviously then we’ll start working towards North Melbourne.”
