Lisa Webb hopes Fremantle’s week in Melbourne playing Essendon and Richmond will be more than a bonding experience, with the Senior Coach setting a target on taking eight points back home to WA.
Webb says the team will relish and hopefully benefit from a week together on the road as they take on two other teams with a 2-1 record from the opening three rounds.
Fremantle fly out on Friday and face Essendon on Windy Hill on Sunday 24 September, followed by Richmond off a five-day break on Friday 29 September at Ikon Park.
The Essendon clash with the first between the two teams in the AFLW, as well as the first game at Windy Hill for the Club in either the AFLW or AFL.
“Getting to go away with the players, they're really excited. We get to bring our full squad so it’s a really great experience for us to get away,” Webb said.
“We're really determined after our performance against Hawthorn to get eight points on the road against a couple of really strong teams.”
Webb says Fremantle will have to be on their toes against a star-studded Bombers’ line-up that includes midfielder Maddy Prespakis, forward Bonnie Toogood and former Freo Docker Steph Cain.
“Maddy, Bonnie and obviously we know a lot about Steph Cain as well – they’re great people and obviously really important performers for their team,” Webb said.
“We're looking forward to the challenge. We’re really keen to see how our midfielders go up against them and seeing what we can deliver at Windy Hill.
“(Toogood) is in really good form. There'll be more of a team performance as to what we need to do (against her), it's not just up to one player.
“We've got a few things in place that we'll see on Sunday, but I'm looking forward to the challenge against one of the best centre forwards in the comp.”
Webb said the Bombers would also need to be wary of Fremantle’s stars, headlined by midfielders Kiara Bowers and captain Hayley Miller.
“They've got the same (challenges) as well, we've got a few of our mids up and running, Aine (Tighe) is doing a great job too. Our backs have been holding up really well,” Webb said.
“I'm sure they're probably going to put a lot of thought into our midfielders as well in the way they're performing.
“(Our midfield) a lot about (Dana) East and (Megan) Kauffman. It's more about our team performance than those two (Miller and Bowers). We know that they're fantastic players, but we don't just rely on those two.”
