- Match day information v Essendon
Up to four changes have already been flagged by senior coach Ross Lyon heading into Saturday’s historic clash with Essendon at Optus Stadium.
Here’s who could come in for Fremantle’s first AFL game at their new home ground.
JOEL HAMLING
Hamling played 22 games in 2017 but was left out of Fremantle’s round one team due to back issues affecting his 2018 season preparation, according to senior coach Ross Lyon.
The defender was given an extra week to get ready, playing for Peel against East Perth in a WAFL pre-season game last Saturday at Rushton Park, collecting 20 disposals and taking eight marks.
“We’re hopeful he’ll play a role this week,” said Lyon on Channel 7 News on Tuesday night.
STEPHEN HILL
Hill is listed as a test for Saturday’s game after missing round one due to a calf injury. Lyon told Channel 7 News he will pick Hill if he is available for selection, with the midfielder needing to get through Thursday’s training session at Optus Stadium to prove his fitness.
ADAM CERRA
An impressive performance for Peel has given Lyon the confidence that Cerra is ready to play at AFL level.
The no.5 draft pick totalled 24 disposals, five inside 50s, three marks, three tackles and kicked a goal in the midfield.
“We’re certain Adam Cerra will play,” Lyon said.
“I urge all our members and fans to get along. He’s pick no.5 in the draft so you get to see Cerra and (Andrew) Brayshaw, our picks two and five, and possibly another debutant.”

A SECOND DEBUTANT
Mitch Crowden, Taylin Duman, Hugh Dixon and Tom North are the players most likely to be Fremantle's potential second debutant this week, as flagged by Lyon.
Of the four, Crowden and Duman have the best chances to pull on the Freo jumper for the first time. Crowden collected 17 disposals, five inside 50s and four tackles in the midfield for Peel and Duman had 23 touches and nine marks at half-back.
While Dixon also starred for Peel with six goals, the key forward is likely to spend more time in the WAFL to build from an interrupted pre-season.
Midfielder Tom North missed last week’s game for Peel but impressed a fortnight ago, with 31 disposals and eight clearances against Subiaco on Saturday 17 March.
ETHAN HUGHES
A travelling emergency in round one, Hughes could be given a chance to reclaim his place as a regular starter after playing 18 games in 2017. If selected, the 23-year-old is likely to play a role as either a defender or on the wing. Hughes didn’t play in either of Fremantle’s JLT Community Series games but collected 15 disposals for Peel against Subiaco a fortnight ago.
BRENNAN COX
Cox played 10 games in his debut AFL season and is pressing for his first game in 2018 after an impressive showing for Peel against East Perth. The second-year key position player, who can play forward or back, collected 20 disposals with seven marks last Saturday.
SEAN DARCY
While it’s unreasonable to expect Darcy to unseat star ruckman Aaron Sandilands from the no.1 ruck role, the 19-year-old is waiting in the wings should Lyon decide to go with two rucks against Essendon. Despite juggling ruck duties with Scott Jones and Lloyd Meek for Peel, Darcy collected 28 hitouts, delivered five inside 50s and kicked 1.1.
MICHAEL APENESS
Michael Apeness last played for Fremantle in round 23 of the 2016 season, and while he’s a long shot for selection, the key forward impressed in his return from injury, kicking three goals and taking 10 marks for Peel. Expect to see the 23-year-old spend more time building in the WAFL before being a serious contender for selection.
