Trans Nullarbor relations were cemented recently when the Scarborough Junior Football Club under 9’s flew to Melbourne to take on the Fremantle Dockers partner club - the Doncaster Heights Dockers.
The match between the two sides was the highlight of a footy-packed weekend for the Scarborough JFC, which also included attendance at the Fremantle Dockers v North Melbourne match (of course), two other AFL fixtures and a tour of the inner workings of the MCG.
The match against the Doncaster Heights Dockers was the brainchild of Scarborough coach Glen McCallum and team manager Alan Cock who sought assistance from the Fremantle Dockers to help organise the match against Doncaster.
“The match was played in great spirit and the kids and parents involved represented the Scarborough Junior Football Club, the Fremantle Dockers and Western Australia proudly,” McCallum said.
“No scores are kept in Under 9s, but the skill and endeavour from players in both teams was premiership-worthy.
“Credit must go the parents and all the people and organisations that have supported this trip for encouraging the boys’ passion for Australian Rules football.”
The players and parents have spent the past few months fundraising for the trip (including raffling a Fremantle Dockers signed jumper, as well as numerous sausage sizzles) to offset the cost.
The Scarborough Junior Football also provided a substantial financial contribution in recognition of the profile it gave the club, and in support of the fundraising and organizational efforts of the team.
For the Doncaster Heights Dockers, who have played host to a number of visiting WA teams throughout 2012 (many of them from WA partner clubs of the Fremantle Dockers), it was a great way to wrap up the season.
“The sun was shining and the boys had a terrific game on a big oval. The competition amongst the two teams was terrific.
We topped it off with a BBQ to finish a fantastic day,” said vice president of the Doncaster Heights Dockers, David Schwarzer.
