Senior Coach Justin Longmuir has confirmed Sam Sturt has hit a trigger in his contract that locks him in at Fremantle for 2024.

Sturt signed a one-year deal following the 2022 season and has triggered a one-year extension on the back of his efforts this season where he has played 11 games and kicked 12 goals.

The 2018 first round selection has struggled to play regular football since he was drafted through both injury and opportunity, playing three games in 2020 and one in 2021 before his 11 AFL appearances so far this year.

He has kicked at least one goal in six of his past seven games and has also shone defensively.

In a game where Fremantle’s execution let the team down in a three-point loss to Brisbane, Sturt was reliable kicking three goals from set shots more than 40 metres out.

In an interview with Adam Papalia on 6PR, Longmuir said Sturt deserved the extra year on his contract.

“It’s great news and something I'm really excited about,” Longmuir told 6PR.

“He hit the scoreboard last week, but like I said during the week, I've been really impressed with the intensity he's bringing both sides of the ball.

“Everyone sees the goals and recognises his speed on offense, but just a couple of chase down tackles and (his) desperate smother last week, they're the things that can really round out his game and add value when he's not touching the ball.

“That can happen sometimes, especially as a forward and you're not involved in the game offensively as much as you'd like - there's always things you can do to be in the game defensively and in the contest.

“He's really worked on that side of his game and doing a fantastic job. It's good to see him get some reward for the work he's put in.”
