Ross Lyon says the contract extensions signed by interstate youngsters Cam Sutcliffe and Hayden Crozier was a vote of confidence in the club and its development academy.

Both players were out of contract at the end of this season but agreed to two-year extensions, keeping them at Freo until the end of 2015.

Sutcliffe hails from South Australia and Crozier is Victorian.

Lyon said the “go-home” factor was always a worry to interstate clubs, whether it was a high-profile player or a youngster.

He said clubs like Fremantle have become better at keeping their playing lists together.

“The well-being committees and the support, it’s a sign of the environment of your club that they feel they can get to where they want in their career and it’s a really good environment for growth,” he said.

The senior coach said players had to weigh up a number of factors pertaining to the direction they wanted their careers to head in.

“Can the environment help me get there and the people employed to do it help me get there,” Lyon said.

Lyon added he was pleased to lock away Sutcliffe and Crozier, who he said had both made significant contributions in Freo’s win against the Gold Coast Suns on Saturday night.

“Hayden Crozier kicked the opening goal and he’s had 14 (disposals), and Cam Sutcliffe came on as the sub and had eight (disposals) and kicked a goal, so we’re really pleased that they’ve committed to the club longer term,” he said.
