- McCarthy return 'more than likely'
- Injury update: Hogan, Lobb, Hill on track
Fremantle will need to make at least two changes heading into Sunday’s clash with Carlton at Optus Stadium with forward Jesse Hogan and midfielder Stephen Hill ruled out due to injury.
Here are the players who could come into consideration for the clash.
Cam McCarthy
McCarthy kicked 10 goals from six appearances to start the season before his omission after round seven, including a five-goal haul against North Melbourne. McCarthy has generated a number of chances in his past two WAFL appearances, kicking 4.3. In his weekly media conference, senior coach Ross Lyon said that McCarthy’s return was ‘more than likely’.
Adam Cerra
Cerra was unlucky to find himself out of the lineup after missing Freo’s win against Port Adelaide due to illness. The 19-year-old has played a number of roles in his 11 games this season, averaging 15.5 disposals per game.
Travis Colyer
The running midfielder was a travelling emergency for Fremantle in round 14 and didn’t play for Peel. In his most recent WAFL appearance, Colyer had 23 disposals, 10 marks and a goal against South Fremantle.
Bailey Banfield
Senior coach Ross Lyon has been reluctant to utilise a tagger this season however he may follow the lead of other AFL teams and utilise a tag on Carlton star Patrick Cripps. If Lyon decides to tag Cripps, Banfield would be a clear option. The 21-year-old played one of his best games of the season for Peel at the weekend with 32 disposals, 10 marks and four tackles.
Mitch Crowden
Mitch Crowden is another young midfielder hitting his straps in the WAFL, averaging 24 disposals and four marks per game this season. Crowden is yet to play an AFL game this season after making nine appearances in his debut year.
Hayden Ballantyne / Lachie Schultz
Either small foward would have been a chance for selection if the Michael Walters suspension was upheld, but with Walters available and Freo’s small forwards in great form, it might be difficult to find a place for Ballantyne or Schultz. Against Perth on Saturday, Ballantyne kicked 2.0 while Schultz had 23 disposals, six tackles and a goal.
Ryan Nyhuis
Fremantle’s in-form backline has made it hard for Ryan Nyhuis to break back into the starting 22. Nyhuis has impressed at AFL and WAFL level this season. In the past fortnight, the defender has averaged 24.5 disposals and 10 marks per game.
Lloyd Meek
Meek was a travelling emergency for Fremantle’s clash with Melbourne and didn’t play for Peel against Perth. Fremantle have utilised one ruck for the majority of the season and unless Lyon decides to go for two ruckmen, Meek is more likely to named as an emergency.
