Peel couldn’t bring home the four points despite leading for most of the game against Claremont on Sunday, narrowly going down to the Tigers by two points at Claremont Oval.

Ten Fremantle-listed players were in action for the Thunder with Liam Reidy and Neil Erasmus shaping up in the midfield, while Josh Corbett, Travis Colyer and Sebit Kuek featured up forward.

Peel's defensive group was largely made up of Fremantle players in Joel Hamling, Josh Draper, Nathan Wilson, Corey Wagner and Karl Worner.

Erasmus found the ball more than any other Peel player with 27 disposals to go along with seven tackles and three inside 50s.

Wilson (23 disposals), Worner and Wagner (22 disposals each) were kept busy down back, while Sebit Kuek booted two goals for the afternoon.

Despite conceding the first goal of the game, Peel bounced back quickly to put through three goals of their own.

Play was able to flow through the midfield but connecting to the forward 50 was difficult for both teams.

Erasmus had a productive first quarter with 10 disposals, which gave his side the opportunity to storm ahead.

The second quarter went Claremont’s way as tempers flared from both sides. Peel fought back after an early goal from Reidy extended their advantage.

Scoring slowed for the Thunder as there was a tight tussle in the midfield. After Claremont got the lead late in the quarter, Peel were able to get one back and go into the main break ahead by four points.

Scoring remained tight in the third quarter as Peel locked the ball in their forward 50. The team weren’t able to make the most of the pressure as they only kicked one major in the term.

Claremont stuck in the game and made sure the scoreline didn’t get away from them as the margin remained just seven points at three quarter time.

Peel held steady for much of the final quarter and pushed the margin to three goals courtesy of a second Kuek major.

It wasn’t until the dying minutes of the game Claremont fought back and ended up kicking the winner with just seconds to play, snatching the game by two points.

After the game, Travis Colyer reflected on the disappointment of the close loss.

“We started well, that’s not something we’ve done in previous weeks but the ending was really disappointing,” Colyer said.

“We did so much right, particularly through the back end of the third quarter to carry the momentum into the fourth and get the lead but we just went away from what we did right.”

After playing the previous few weeks for Peel in a comeback from a knee injury, Colyer is happy with how he’s progressing.

“The body’s feeling not too bad, I’m still just finding my feet and the first couple of weeks was trying to see how my knee was feeling,” he said.

“The aim is to find a bit of fitness and some form as well … hopefully the next few weeks I’ll find some decent form and push for selection.”

Peel Thunder will look to bounce back next week against Perth at Mineral Resources Park on Saturday 17 June.
