Executive General Manager of Football Peter Bell has given an update on Will Brodie’s ankle injury, saying the midfielder isn’t expected to miss a significant number of weeks.
Bell also gave a brief update on Sean Darcy’s contract status, with Fremantle starting a dialogue with the ruckman ahead of his contract expiry following the 2024 season.
Brodie was one of the players in the mix to replace the suspended Jaeger O’Meara for Saturday night’s clash with Richmond, however the midfielder came off late with the ankle injury after a tackle at a mid-week training session.
“He rolled his ankle at main training on Wednesday. There was a lot of swelling,” Bell told ABC Sports Talk.
“The good news is structurally, there’s no syndesmosis damage, so we can rule that one out.
“It was hard to know exactly how quickly he’ll be able to return when the ankle was so swollen.
“We’re expecting, given it’s just a severe roll of the ankle but no other real structural damage, that it shouldn’t be too long.
“Will’s really tough and a good healer, historically. He has that in his favour.
“Whether it’s going to be two weeks, three weeks or longer, I couldn’t really tell you at this stage, but we’re hopeful he won’t be out for a long time.”
Darcy is also unavailable for tonight’s clash with Richmond due to a hamstring injury that is expected to see him on the sidelines for 1-2 weeks.
Bell said the Club and Darcy had time on their sides in regards to a contract extension, with 18 months remaining on the deal.
“Sean has (another) year to run on his contract through to the end of 2024, and we began a dialogue with Scott Lucas, who represents Sean, and Sean himself and his family,” Bell said.
“Given Sean’s stature in the game, it might take a little while to work through all the details, but we’re really confident and we see Sean being a huge part of our future for next year and beyond.”
