After four consecutive wins the Walyalup players are enjoying a well-deserved four-day break heading into the round 12 bye, however Sean Darcy hasn’t been joining them.
The ruckman is set for a stint on the sidelines after sustaining a ‘moderate grade’ hamstring strain according to Executive General Manager of Football Peter Bell, but Darcy is determined to make sure he misses as little football as possible.
Instead of staying in Victoria as planned following Saturday’s win at the MCG against Narrm, Darcy headed back to Perth to get to work on his reconditioning.
“Sean was really professional, he had some holidays planned and was going to visit the family in Barwon Heads in Victoria,” Bell told Sport FM.
“Once he sustained the injury, he made the decision to jump on the plane, get back and get the scans done and get stuck into the reconditioning straight away like a real professional that we know Sean is.
“He may miss one less game because of the bye, which is fortunate.
“It’s difficult to put a timeframe on, it is a moderate hamstring injury so it could be a few weeks.”
Bell said Walyalup are currently preparing for Jaeger O’Meara’s AFL Tribunal hearing on Wednesday, with the midfielder handed a one-game suspension for Rough Conduct following his tackle on Charlie Spargo in the third quarter against Narrm.
“It’s going to be difficult as the precedent is they haven’t been successful, these types of challenges (on Rough Conduct suspensions) this year,” Bell said.
“We are all very cognisant of the fact that concussion is a very big issue in AFL football. Incidents that could lead to harm as far as concussions are concerned are looked at very closely by the AFL.
“I won’t go into it, but we think there are grounds that will form the basis of our submission that can have that penalty downgraded.
“We think there’s a strong enough argument there and we want to support our player in this instance.”
