Round 11 Rising Star nominee Jye Amiss has shown a maturity beyond his years on the field in 2023, with the 19-year-old kicking 19 goals from 10 games playing in one of the toughest roles for young players.
The Busselton Magpies product has dealt with his fair share of adversity in his short career, including battling a significant kidney injury early in May 2022 that landed him in hospital.
Needing three months to recover, Amiss was restricted to just seven WAFL games and three AFL games – two of them finals – in his first year on an AFL list.
And prior to being drafted at no.8 by Fremantle in 2021, Amiss spent his draft year commuting to Perth from Busselton to train and play, famously kicking 51.15 for East Perth in the Colts in 2021.

To Amiss, the five-hour round trip to train or play was not an issue thanks to the sense of perspective he’s received from his unique upbringing.
In 2008, Amiss’ mum Jeanette became a foster parent, and across the years his household has been home to 21 foster children.
Currently there are six foster children at his family home in Busselton, where Amiss will spend part of the players’ four-day break during Walyalup’s round 12 bye.
“I’ll be heading down and see the family. It will be good to get down there and see them,” Amiss said.
“When I go down it’s always awesome to see the family and all the foster kids down that have been through my journey throughout my footy career. It’s going to be really good to see them.”
Amiss said sharing his household has allowed him to feel thankful for all the opportunities he has been afforded.
“They’ve had a hard upbringing and I’ve had a bit of an easy upbringing,” Amiss said.
“It really makes you so thankful for what’s happened to you when you’re younger.
“I’ve had a really good upbringing, and now we’re trying to give them the best upbringing they can have. That gives me joy.”
Amiss has been lauded for the goalkicking accuracy that he developed from countless sessions practicing his set shots around the three football ovals in Busselton.
Now a football star accustomed to kicking three goals at the MCG against Narrm on Saturday, Amiss said still plans to have a kick when he’s home.
“I might get down there and kick a couple,” Amiss said.
“I’ll take a good four days off, rest the body and mind. It’s been a good stint of footy.
“I didn’t play much last year and I’m getting a couple of games under my belt now. I’ll take the time off to relax and rejuvenate.”
