Vice captain Caleb Serong couldn’t be happier with the development of key forward Jye Amiss, who arguably played his best game out of a string of impressive performances during Walyalup’s seven-point win against Narrm on Saturday at the MCG.
The 19-year-old kicked his fourth three-goal haul of the season against Narrm, including his third in four weeks, as he franked his consistent growth in just his 12th AFL game.
He now has 19 goals from 10 games this season to move to the outright lead in Walyalup’s goalkicking, ahead of Lachie Schultz on 17 goals and Michael Walters on 16 goals.
Amiss also had two goals assists, including setting up Walyalup’s opener to Bailey Banfield, as well as a mature play where he collected the ball in space on the flank and eventually found Schultz in the pocket.
Serong highlighted this decision making as one of Amiss’s best traits.
“I think Jye is just someone that amazes me every day,” Serong told 3AM.
“For a young player that’s only played a dozen or so games, he’s so calm, composed, relaxed and always seems to make the right decision. I feel that’s something.
“He’s been getting on the end of a few goals too with another three tonight.”
Serong added that Amiss had dealt with some tough on-on-one matchups, with Walyalup boasting three young key defenders in the 21-year-old Luke Jackson and 20-year-old Josh Treacy.
Amiss and Treacy went head-to-head against two of the best defenders in the competition in All Australians Steven May and Jake Lever.
“It’s his ability to compete in the air against some of the best key backs in the comp,” Serong said.
“He’s getting one of the best, if not their best, key back. They’re big boys and Jye’s (only) played a dozen games.
“His ability to get it to ground and allow our smalls to get to work, he’s finished off his work as well.
“He’s someone who is going to get better and better the more he plays.”
