A Nat Fyfe nearing full fitness plus the recent form of Neil Erasmus and Matthew Johnson is giving Senior Coach Justin Longmuir some headaches at the selection table.
In the past fortnight, Fyfe has played back-to-back games starting as the substitute, with Erasmus in the starting 22 and Johnson out through suspension.
Johnson had 22 disposals against Brisbane in a career-best performance before he was suspended for two games, while Erasmus has averaged 15.5 disposals and seven tackles per game for the two games he’s started in 2023.
All three played through the midfield in match simulation drills on Wednesday, as did Will Brodie who won plenty of the football in his bid to return to the AFL line-up.

Longmuir said he would try and find the balance between rewarding the players who have been responsible for Walyalup’s back-to-back wins in the AFL, while also recognising form for Peel, who are currently on top of the WAFL standings with five wins from six games.
“It comes back to who played and executed their role and we’ve had that in the AFL side the last couple of weeks,” Longmuir said.
“There won’t be a heap of changes.
“We have a lot of players performing well at Peel, they’re sitting on top of the ladder.
“It’s a good position to be in. The fact that we’ve got a lot of players in form, Johnno (is available) from suspension, and we’ve been really pleased with what Neil’s done since he came into the side. They’re good problems to have.”
Longmuir said Fyfe was not locked in to start in the 22 against Geelong, with Walyalup against wanting to see how the star pulls up after Wednesday’s training session.
“We just need to make sure his foot has pulled up well and he’s confident enough,” Longmuir said.
“It’s a bit of a step up, he’s been playing 40 minutes (against Hawthorn) and probably 30 minutes (against Sydney). It’s a bit of a step up to play 80 or 90 minutes.
“We need to make sure he’s really confident in his foot and confident in his performance.”
