Fremantle Dockers midfielder Nat Fyfe said the team’s winless start to 2016 has provided an opportunity for growth within the Freo leadership group.

The reigning Brownlow medallist said that he and fellow teammates would meet the challenge of leading in adverse conditions, and that the environment would foster better leadership within the team.

“I’m taking that challenge on, and I’m enjoying the challenge,” Fyfe said.

“Under adversity you really grow and this is an opportunity for me, Michael Barlow, Cam Sutcliffe and our broad base of leaders to really grow when circumstances aren’t great.”

Fyfe has been acting captain since David Mundy suffered a calf injury, which has forced him to miss Freo’s past two games.

Speaking about the Freo skipper, Fyfe said that while Mundy wasn’t currently able to play, his leadership role hasn’t diminished as his qualities extend further than just on game day.

“As a leader, he’s able to lead when he’s not playing as well and he has a strong involvement around the club.”

And while Mundy’s leadership is impressive off the field, Fyfe said he’d know what to expect once the skipper returns from injury.

“He’ll be itching to get out there and perform, and that’s what he does best” Fyfe said.
