Young gun Fremantle forward Jye Amiss feels Fremantle’s 18-goal effort against Hawthorn is a sign the forward line is starting to gel.
Amiss is in his second year in the AFL, and played along fellow tall forwards Luke Jackson, who is in his first year at Fremantle, and Josh Treacy who was a rookie draft pick ahead of the 2021 season.
Amiss kicked three goals, and gave off another likely goal to Michael Frederick as a part of his two goal assists.
Jackson had two goals and 24 disposals, while Treacy had one goal before he was subbed off for Nat Fyfe in the third quarter.
Amiss has worked particularly closely with Treacy and said he loved playing with the fellow young tall.
“Having Josh Treacy come back into the side, the one extra tall helped a lot for most of the game,” Amiss said on the Final Siren Podcast with Duck and Oz.
“Obviously it helps the other forwards out as we were able to get miss matches and that helps us all out.
“I think as a group right now, we have really good connections, talk a lot, communicate a lot and it’s starting to come together.”
Amiss praised the work up the ground from Fremantle’s midfielders, allowing Amiss to play a more natural game.
“Our ball movement, we were able to switch the ball and come at the open side, and I was able to come up and get some distance on my opponent,” Amiss said.
“(Hawthorn defender) Sam Frost is quite a quick player as well so I had to try a few different things, take him up the ground, bring him back and multiple efforts.
“When the ball movement is coming like that and it’s coming straight at the footy, I see that as one of my strengths.”
The 19-year-old Amiss said he wants to continue to get stronger and fitter as he looks build on the 15 goals he’s kicked from his 10 games to date.
“There’s so much room to grow as well, I’m in my second year. I think I put on eight kilos in my first season which was pretty good,” Amiss said.
“I just want to keep building on that and (build my fitness). I want to be able to get up the ground and get back.
“There’s so much I can add to my game still and it’s really exciting.”
