New recruit Serena Gibbs couldn’t be happier to be heading west to play for her new Club after she was traded from Carlton to Fremantle in the AFLW Sign and Trade Period.
Fremantle Senior Coach Lisa Webb said the 22-year-old brings more than good, with the ability to play as a key position player on both ends of the ground and also on the wing.
The pair met for the first time since the trade at a function during Fremantle’s round one AFL game against St Kilda.
“It was fantastic to see Serena again and get to know her a little bit more and meet her family, which was the first time we’ve met them,” Webb said.
“We know she’s keen to learn, that’s definitely the first thing. She sees a lot of development coming in her game and so do we, so there’s a lot of upside.
“She could play back, on the wing or forward and we’ve seen her pinch hit in the ruck as well.
“At 179cm, she gives us flexibility and has a real eagerness to learn, which is something that drove ourselves and the rest of the recruiting team to her straight away.”
Gibbs is also excited to work with Webb, who she believes has the perfect coaching style for her personality.
“With her teaching background, Lisa knows how to work with a lot of different types of people and she understands that people learn differently,” Gibbs said.
“I’m a visual learner and benefit from prompts to support my development as a person and a player.
“She knows how to talk to a group. She puts it out on the table saying this is what we’re going to do and how we’re going to do it together and do it united.”
Gibbs is relishing the excitement ahead of the commencement of pre-season, which is expected to start in June.
“I’m excited and a bit nervous about the move, it just feels like the right decision for me in my life right now, it’s looking all Dockers and I cannot wait to get started!” Gibbs said.
