Ross do you take more positives or negatives out of that performance?
Well it’s on percentages, for 75 per cent of that I thought we were fantastic. For 24.99 per cent of the last quarter (we weren't)... and we’ll take that last little bit that I didn’t see. For three quarters we were disciplined and played exactly how we wanted to play, we planned and prepared well enough and then we let them off the chain. I saw they had a big last quarter against Melbourne. They rolled the dice a bit and what happens sometimes when you roll the dice is that you get out goal side. It’s a bit of a lucky dip. They went their way and you blink and you are under pressure. When we got control of the ball we made some mistakes with the ball when we should have controlled it a bit more. More positives to be honest. To see Ed Langdon stand under the hard ball like he did and take a great mark. Ethan Hughes stood under a really fierce high ball. Those sort of things get you over the line, the critical times. It was pleasing. Probably the one I don’t understand is Brady Grey. He thought he’d kicked a goal from the goal square and he was putting his hands up and there wasn’t a review. I am not expert, but I thought there would have been a review. I suppose in '09 in the Grand final and someone hit the post and there was no review. I thought typically we reviewed them.
Do you speak to the AFL about that call?
I’m not bleeding but want some some clarity.

Brandon Ellis’ goal at the end, did you think you’d lost it?
I’d thought we’d lost it half way through the last quarter. With 21 seconds to go I’d like to be down there to meet the players and pick up the pieces or celebrate with them. I left, got to the bottom of the lift, there is nothing I can do. It’s like Collingwood v GWS the night before. You’ve got to do, what you’ve got to do. Clearly there was some good play, Neale cleared it and found Mundy. When I got out of the lift, Mundy had marked it and I wasn’t sure how far out it was. Then they panned to the wider angle and it was 30 metres at 45 degrees. I thought “he’s done this before, he’ll probably do it again”. To handle that sort of pressure…. he’s been wonderful this year in a new role as a forward and midfielder. It’s really pleasing.

How’d you rate Joel Hamling at the back today?
I think what happens, everyone gets to play their role and when everyone plays their part. So I thought our back line looked really good for three quarters, when the mids and the forwards were playing their part. When you don’t play your part, everyone gets put under more pressure. So really its Joel or the mids and the forwards playing their part and his other defenders helping him. Joel was pretty good, but everyone had their moments. In the last quarter we’d be saying we didn’t execute our role and all of a sudden we see how far vulnerable you become in league footy. So there are a lot of lessons learnt. Congratulate them on the win, but address some of the concerns. Ask them for some input, the players acknowledge that, so we don’t have to show the tape on Monday and we all get to move on.
What do you think it was that stopped the run?
They put some fresh legs in there and changed it up a bit. When you are behind, the coach says roll the dice, you just roll the dice and you tend to get forward at stoppages. If you’re not tackling well and winning the ball, they have numbers out. It was probably a bit of luck on their behalf. But you are five down you have nothing to lose. So you roll the dice and it paid off. We needed to control the ball more, tackle better, and see them out better.
What can you do as a coach in that situation?
We send messages. Tighten up on Grigg, change the midfield mix, get Lachie Neale back in there and we went to a seventh defender. You rely on your leaders to win the ball and organise themselves. You try to identify what was wrong. Maybe too much movement around the stoppages. Its not rocket science, its just basics.
Pretty happy with Bradley Hill tonight?
We acklowedge that all of our recruits Bradley Hill, Joel Hamling and Shane Kersten are really growing every week. There has been a really bonefide play on McCarthy. I think our kids are going well – Langdon, Grey all played their part. Taberner had his moments, so it’s a combination. The competition is really even, we are seeing on a weekly basis and within games from quarter to quarter. If you’re not at your best or you drop off, you can get exposed very quickly. It’s a fortunate position for all clubs, if you prepare well, you can be competitive.
Is that the best performance you’ve seen from Michael Walters in that midfield type role?
I think if you look at the numbers, you wouldn’t have liked that last quarter very much. He’s got plenty to learn. He was an All Australian midfielder when he was 15/16 years old. So we know he’s a mid. It’s just having the courage to put him in there and shift others around. I thought it was pretty good, it gives us more flexibility.
Is that his role long term?
I think it’s a bit of both, you need to be flexible. The best teams have show over the years that you need to be flexible.
