New recruit Jaeger O’Meara has made it clear he couldn’t be happier with the players around him at his new AFL Club.

Speaking at Tuesday’s Annual Members’ Meeting at Optus Stadium, the former Hawk and Sun confirmed he would play mostly midfield and a bit of forward in 2023, and he couldn’t wait to work with his new teammates.

O’Meara highlighted the leadership of Caleb Serong and Andrew Brayshaw in particular.

“I’ve been super impressed with the guys already,” O’Meara said.

“We’ve got some great leaders at a young age in Andy and Caleb in particular.

“When I was in early last week, I was super impressed with how Caleb was driving the standards with the one to four year guys and Andy’s done the same over the last couple of days.”

Serong’s leadership showed itself in a humourous way in O’Meara’s first week when the 21-year-old told O’Meara to make sure he corrected people when his first name was pronounced incorrectly.

“It’s ‘Jay-ger’ not ‘Yay-ger’, one of our coaches said ‘Yay-ger’ last week and Caleb made sure that I corrected him!” O’Meara said.

The long-term future of Fremantle’s midfield is also in good hands thanks to their draft haul in 2021.

“I’m looking forward to working with some of the guys like Neil Erasmus and Matty Johnson,” O’Meara said.

“I think the sky is the limit for those two. They’re doing a lot of things right already.

“I’ve been in the system for 11 years, so hopefully there’s some knowledge I can impart on them and lead them in games as well.”
