Kara Antonio’s comeback to football is confirmed with Fremantle’s inaugural captain one of two changes to the side to play Hawthorn in round 10.
Antonio and Tara Stribley return to the Freo line-up for the Saturday afternoon clash at Fremantle Oval.
Playing her first match of Season 7, Antonio replaces Amy Mulholland (omitted) in the forward line, while Tara Stribley will take the place of midfielder Nikki Gore who is being managed.
The match is a double celebration for 30-year-old Antonio who will being playing her 47th and final AFLW match nearly four months after surgery on a significant pre-season hamstring injury.
“It’s exciting news that Kara Antonio has gone through her full rehab with her hamstring and will be back this week,” said Senior Coach Trent Coooper.
“I’m excited and the whole group is excited.
“She’ll be out there in the forward line, helping direct traffic and a few goal assists.
“No doubt her teammates will be trying to help her hit the scoreboard as well.”
Fremantle captain Hayley Miller has been named in the midfield after training on Thursday night following a hip on hip collision in the dying minutes of last weekend’s win over Sydney.
“There wasn’t too much that was going to stop her from playing in Kara’s last game and the last game of the season as well,” Cooper said.
Fremantle sit 15th on the ladder with two wins and a draw, two points behind five teams – including Hawthorn – with three wins from nine rounds.
“Hawthorn have had a really good season in their first year of the competition,” Cooper said.
“They’re above us on the ladder so we’ll be trying to hopefully get the four points and jump over them.
“There’s a lot to play for – it’s Jess Duffin’s last game for Hawthorn as well. She’s been an ornament to the AFLW game so really looking forward to the challenge.”
