Fremantle Dockers sports development student, Holly Johnson has been announced as one of two finalists in the WA School Based Traineeship Awards to be announced late September. Holly is a standout student in the SEDA program and is a brilliant ambassador for not only SEDA, but the Fremantle Dockers as well.

As an education provider, SEDA focuses on the understanding that not all students learn in the same way. The SEDA program is built on the foundation that the education delivered needs to address a student’s interest. Students gain nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications, including Certificate II and III in Sport and Recreation as well as Certificate II in Sports Coaching. Along with these qualifications, students learn invaluable life skills that provide them with the confidence and ability to pursue further education or employment. SEDA looks to engage students in their education delivering a curriculum that focuses on their passion for sport. The Fremantle Dockers are crucial partners in effectively delivering such a successful program.

Throughout her first semester at SEDA, Holly has built upon the qualifications she received assisting in the delivery of the Freo Fundamentals Program. With her Level One AFL Coaching accreditation, Level One AFL Umpiring accreditation and her ability to deliver First Aid, Holly has been able to apply her proficiency to this crucial component of Fremantle’s community strategy.

As a result of her Student Workplace Learning with the Fremantle Football Club, Holly has demonstrated how her traineeship provides employment opportunities as well as the chance to network with key industry profiles. Holly believes her placement at Fremantle has been the perfect opportunity to “pursue my passion for sport and hopefully make a successful career doing so.”

Holly has developed key life skills that will contribute to her achieving positive outcomes for a future in employment or further study. She has completed her literacy and numeracy assignments to an exceptionally high standard, which will greatly assist in demonstrating her competency, come completion of the program. She has incurred strong public speaking skills, leadership skills and has been very effective with her time management.

“Speaking effectively and confidently in front of a group, in my opinion, is one of my greatest strengths.” Holly says she also believes that “Australian culture relies on people with effective leadership skills and a sense of community spirit to improve opportunities and provide a sense of togetherness within local communities.”

The skills and knowledge Holly has developed this year has been transferrable across her other sporting interests including her involvement with Surf Lifesaving, netball coaching, Auskick facilitation and assisting Fremantle’s matchday activities.

We wish Holly all the very best with the award ceremony in September.
