Bailey Banfield is not just a talented forward for Fremantle, he is also the Club’s Sustainability Officer, and says as part of that role he has been able to engage in some positive discussions with the Club on a range of sustainability matters.

Speaking from his home town of Broome, Banfield believes he and teammates are already making positive changes.

“I’m the sustainability officer at the Club so we’ve created a sustainability strategy and a series of initiatives as a Club in what we’re doing to improve in this space,” Banfield said.

“There’s an interested group of players that have been having discussions with the Club throughout the sustainability process and we’re doing some really strong work in that space.

"We’re trying to grow as a Club in this space and there’s been some really strong and great initiatives that the Club’s working on.”

Holidaying in Broome in the off-season, Banfield is an avid contributor at Fremantle's Kimberley 9s event taking place on Cable Beach.

The two-day event is a joint initiative between Fremantle’s Purple Hands Foundation and WA Police to reward primary and secondary school students from schools throughout the Kimberley for good attendance and behaviour in the past 12 months.

“Hopefully, it’s here for many years to come,” Banfield said.

“The kids all get plenty out of it and we all have fun up here as well.

“Anytime you get the day out of school and get to play footy with your mates is a win.

“There’s great talent up here and we’ve got a really good Kimberley representation in our playing group as well."

Banfield says he is working hard on his fitness after signing a two-year contract extension despite fielding offers from other clubs.

“Two years is great, it's nice to get a bit of security and not be worrying about it every year,” Banfield said.

“The fact that I’ve been a part of it – building for the last four or five years – it would have been a massive shame to leave now, having tasted a little bit of success and hopefully we can go a couple of steps further next year.

“I love the Club. Not only what we do on the field, but also all of this stuff outside of footy is really important to me and a special part of what we do.”
