Vice-captain Ange Stannett paid tribute to the side’s defenders after a tough game against Collingwood at Frem
The loss was Fremantle's third-straight defeat against a top four side, with the Magpies running out 29 point winners.
Collingwood won the inside 50 count 36 to 22, but only managed to score four goals.
“Collingwood are a quality side,” Stannett said.
“They’ve got a lot to fight for – they want to stay in the top four. We knew they were going to bring a tough contest.
“Credit to our backline - and the rest of the team for the team defence holding up as long as we did.
“We only had two inside 50s in the first half so I’m so proud of the group – especially given the personnel that is out as well.”
With key defender Janelle Cuthbertson sidelined last week with an ankle and knee issue, Laura Pugh stepped up and fought hard against Magpies spearhead Sabrina Frederick.
Injuries forced Fremantle to call on a WAFLW train-on player and blooded 21-year-old defender Madizen Wilkins from Subiaco.
“It was great to see her come in and do well,” she said.
“I’ve played with her at Subiaco Lions and have trained with her a lot in defence.”
Fremantle threw young forward Amy Franklin down back and regular defender Emma O’Driscoll up forward in an effort to create an avenue to goal after a scoreless first half.
“Emma was great, we always know what energy she’s going to bring,” Stannett said.
“She was causing a bit of havoc up there and 'Franky' did a great job down back."
Stannett also paid tribute to more than 2000 fans for bringing energy and excitement to Fremantle’s first Pride Round game on home soil.
“Such a special round and we loved having our purple army out here. Super grateful for our fans, they give us a lot of energy,” she said.
Fremantle now have a 6-day break before a first clash with expansion club Sydney next weekend.
“It’s another opportunity to go up against a new team and play on a new ground,” said Stannett.
“It will be great for the group to get away together.”
