David Mundy may have had 376 games to his career, but it fell two games short as Fremantle’s season ended with a semi final loss to Collingwood at the MCG.
A late David Mundy goal was a rare highlight on a night where Fremantle were outmatched by a ferocious Collingwood in front of more than 90,000 fans.
Despite knowing he won’t be around for a 20th pre-season this summer, Mundy was still clearly invested in the journey of the Club he has called home since he arrived as an 18-year-old.
“Games like tonight and the next two weeks are what we train for,” Mundy said.
“Now a lot of our group has had a taste of it and hopefully that will drive them forward.
“We didn’t give ourselves a good opportunity tonight even though we made the semi finals.
“We didn’t capitalise and weren’t able to get it done on that real fundamental level. There are a lot of boys really hurting and hopefully that spurs them on in the pre-season to get better because they are the kind of games you want to be playing in.
“I think the Club is in a really good journey. Our young crew coming through are ready to take this Club forward for the next 10 or 15 years.”
Mundy said his ‘retirement tour’ was almost overwhelming due to the sheer level of love and supper he had received from the Purple Army.
“It has been crazy to be honest,” Mundy said.
“The love and support that has come mine and my family’s way has been overwhelming and we are really thankful for that.
“It has come from all corners of the globe, not just Fremantle people but the AFL community in general, it has been crazy.”
Mundy was thankful to share the moment with his wife Sally, son Hudson and more than 20 family and friends joining him in the rooms post match.
“I grew up in Victoria and moved over the Nullarbor 18 years ago,” Mundy said.
“Our friendships and family connections have remained just as strong even with that separation.
“They have travelled around the country with me, some of them around the world with me for football stuff. So, to have a good crew here tonight is really great.”
