Fremantle will use the pain of Saturday night’s semi final loss to Collingwood as the fuel to have another season of improvement after Fremantle’s promising year had a disappointing end in front of a packed MCG.
The 21-year-old admitted that Fremantle weren’t up to Collingwood’s pressure or the occasion, calling on his teammates to learn from the experience.
“I think the occasion got the better of a few guys and that’s a learning experience for a lot of us,” Serong told 3AW.
“This is not the end of our story, this is just a little blip on the radar and I think we’re going to get better from this experience.
“Playing in front of 90,000 at the MCG, the majority Collingwood fans, was a great experience and one that I and lot of us will learn from.”
ALL THE MOMENTS
The midfielder said Fremantle had done everything they could to be prepared for the experience on the game’s biggest stage.
“I personally think (our preparation) was one of our biggest strengths of the year, especially away from home,” Serong said.
“Our preparation and process that we’ve gone through every week has held us in really good stead and I don’t think anyone changed that tonight.”
Serong felt Fremantle weren’t allowed to play their brand by a frantic Collingwood, with Freo both being limited with their entries and unable to keep the ball forward when they did advance.
‘We weren’t able to play the game we wanted to and put some scoreboard pressure on and lock it in our front half,” Serong said.
“I feel we didn’t play our brand and we didn’t play our way for long enough. Throughout the year when we have played our way, as a collective, we’ve beaten a lot of good teams.
“The next stage is doing that consistently with four-quarter performances.”
