Senior Coach Justin Longmuir has backed Andrew Brayshaw to play through a second week of heavy tagging as Fremantle prepare for Saturday’s clash with GWS at Manuka Oval in Canberra.
Brayshaw managed 22 disposals, nine contested possessions and a goal in last week’s RAC Derby despite the attention of Jackson Nelson, and he is likely to have Giant Harry Perryman come to him at the centre bounce after impressive weeks shutting down Tom Liberatore and Zach Merrett.
“We expect (a tag), Perryman’s been doing a few jobs on different players and we expect him to go to Andy,” Longmuir said.
“I thought Andy was really impressive with the way that he handled the tag on the weekend and the physicality Nelson brought to him.
“We looked after him as a team and Andy did his best to bring others into the game and sacrifice himself for the betterment of the team.
“He’s had a fair bit of practice of dealing with it this year, about six or seven times now. He’s becoming accustomed to it and we’ll continue to help him out as best we can.”
Longmuir was also impressed with fellow midfielder Caleb Serong’s ability to stand up – both with his football and physically - for Brayshaw.
“They’re like twins, like brothers from another mother,” Longmuir said.
“They look after each other well, they’re good mates off the field and are really strong leaders at our club. They really embody the behaviours we want to see.
“I’m not only rapt with Caleb's ability to look after his teammates and get around them - he’s been doing that all year - but in the last couple of weeks we’ve seen his form return and he’s really leading the way with his ferociousness at the contest and at the man early on, which is setting us up. He’s doing a good job.”
