The skills and abilities of WA’s young female footballers are taking off, according to Fremantle midfielder Ed Langdon, who was impressed by the talent on show at last night's girls football clinic held at Cockburn ARC.
It was a chance for aspiring young AFLW players to get up close to their Fremantle Dockers AFL and AFLW heroes.
The players put the group through their paces with a number of fun and testing drills for the younger girls while the more mature players ran through more technical training runs.
Langdon said he enjoyed having the opportunity to see the future of women’s footy in action.
“It’s great to be out here with such a good group of junior girls who came out tonight,” Langdon said.
“It was also good to be able to get around the AFLW players who came out and have a run around with them.
“Most importantly it seems like the kids had a great time. They were doing really well. One girl was pretty much a better kick than me so I was really impressed by the skills on show.”
Langdon said he’s enjoying seeing women's football take off and has been following Fremantle’s AFLW season closely.
“It’s awesome. I’ve watched every game and I’ve been following it really closely. They’re flying at the moment and playing great footy,” Langdon said.
“Hopefully, they can go to Darwin and get the chocolates and keep their form going.”
AFLW forward Gabby O’Sullivan said the team is loving the support from the Fremantle community.
“It’s going well so far and to have that support gives us that extra motivation to get those wins,” O’Sullivan said.
“It was tough missing last week's game (through suspension) so I can’t wait to get on the plane to Darwin.”
O’Sullivan added that it was heartening to see the younger generation of female football players getting involved in the game.
“It’s great to see so many girls coming down and having a kick of the footy,” O’Sullivan said.
“Back in our day there weren’t as many opportunities to do things like this but it’s great to see so many young girls willing to play footy and choose footy as their sport now there’s this clear pathway to AFLW.”
