Starkick and the Fremantle Dockers Foundation, have been named as a finalist in the 2016 National Disability Awards in the category “Excellence in community partnerships”.
The award recognises excellence in developing cross-sector community partnerships that improve access and participation in Australian life for people with disability.
Starkick is a volunteer-run program that provides an opportunity for children with special needs and all ability levels to play AFL football in their community, and is proudly supported by the Fremantle Dockers Foundation.
The initiative was developed by Rob Geersen president of the Coolbinia Junior Football Club to create more sporting opportunities for children with special needs.
“Starkick is all about inclusion through football and providing opportunities for special needs children, which so many of us take for granted,” Geersen said.
“Our goal is that one day every child, no matter their needs and no matter where they live, will have the opportunity to play the greatest game in the world.”
The Starkick program runs with a simple motto aimed at promoting participation, “If you want to play, we will find a way”.
Fremantle CEO Steve Rosich said the partnership with Starkick was one that players, members and staff were very proud of.
“Working with Starkick has been an absolute honour and privilege for our football club,” Rosich said.
“Whilst many people watch our great game, not everyone has the opportunity and ability to participate.
“The Starkick program changes all of that, and we have met some amazing young people who, thanks to Starkick, have nothing stopping them from picking up a football and taking part.“
The National Disability Awards are a major part of the Federal Government’s celebration of International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).
The award ceremony will be held at Parliament House in Canberra on Monday 7 November.
The Fremantle Dockers Foundation is proud to have Starkick as an associate level ‘Friend of the Foundation’.
