Fremantle could see their young gun key forward Jye Amiss play again in 2022, providing he continues to show improvement after recovering from a kidney injury, according to Senior Coach Justin Longmuir.
The 18-year-old has just one AFL appearance to his name, kicking two goals against North Melbourne on debut, with an additional 11 goals from four league games for Peel before sustaining the impact injury against South Fremantle in round five on 21 May.
He was then placed on Fremantle’s inactive list due to the likelihood he would not play again in 2022.
With Fremantle opting to pass with their second selection at the mid-season rookie draft, Amiss remains eligible to play at AFL level this year.
The talented no.8 pick in the 2021 NAB AFL Draft returned to main training with his teammates on Tuesday at Optus Stadium and appeared to be unaffected by the injury and long recovery process.
“He is (a chance to play this year). We probably ruled him out early days and then left the door open, just for his own motivation more than anything,” Longmuir said.
“There’s opportunity if he ticks every box along the way and gets the all clear from the docs, he’ll be a chance to return late in the season.
“He’s embraced his rehab, there’s still some pretty significant targets he needs to tick off before he plays again but we’re hopeful he can do that and return before the end of the season.”

Longmuir said Amiss would need to play again at WAFL level before he would be considered at AFL level.
“I think it’s looking more to WAFL at this stage, but you’d never rule (AFL) out, especially for someone of his ability,” Longmuir said.
“We’ll just tick off each step as they come and that will start with the WAFL.”
