Jesse Hogan has only played four games with Fremantle but he already likes where the team is headed.

The club pulled off what some have called the biggest upset so far in 2019 with a 24-point win against GWS at UNSW Canberra Oval.

The win ended a nine-game winning streak for the Giants at the ground.

Hogan, who joined Fremantle in the 2018 NAB AFL Trade Period, said he was hopeful Freo can build on Saturday’s victory.

“To come away with the win after being up by only a point or two at half time and coming home strong, it was a big step forward for this group and we’ll take a lot from that,” Hogan said.

“Coming out of last week (against West Coast), we felt like it was a missed opportunity. We probably lacked a bit of polish. We reviewed the game and came into this one with a really clear plan.

“GWS obviously have a star-studded list with their midfield including Josh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio…we knew they specialise around the contest and the stoppages. 

“We also put some time into our forward 50 craft and came away with the win.

“You don’t want to get carried away as it’s round five and we’re 3-2 but at the same time, competing really well against West Coast and now to beat one of the top-four teams away from home, it’s a huge win.

“We’ll review what we did well and then move on to next week when we take on the Bulldogs.”

Hogan said Fremantle could take confidence from securing their first win of the season on the road.

“We travel almost every second week so winning on the road is something that we need to do,” Hogan said.

“I think it’s something (improving road form) that’s been hanging over Fremantle’s heads so to beat GWS here is huge.

“We don’t want to take too much away from it but at the same time, we’ll reflect on it and take what we can into our next away trip.”
