Peel Thunder have won their sixth game of the season, beating the Subiaco Lions at home to remain in 6th place on the WAFL ladder.
14 Fremantle-listed players lined up for Peel Thunder on Saturday, with 12 playing in Peel’s league game against the Subiaco Lions.
The match marked the football return of Fremantle winger Nathan O'Driscoll after the 20-year-old recovered from a foot injury which has seen him sidelined since round eight of the AFL season.
Joel Western (21 disposals) made his mark early, kicking Peel’s first in the opening minutes of the game but a centre bounce clearance from Subiaco led to a fast reply.
Despite their midfield dominance throughout the quarter Subiaco’s chances were limited due to Peel’s defensive pressure, only managing to kick two goals from repeated entries.
A strong mark from Matthew Johnson inside 50 led to Peel’s second goal as they went into the first break trailing by eight points.
Looking to build on their first quarter Subiaco challenged early but Nathan Wilson’s composure in the backline prevented Subiaco from pulling away.
Goals from Lloyd Meek and Sebit Kuek gave Peel the lead, but a late goal from Subiaco left the teams level at 37 points each heading into the second half.
Connor Blakely’s skills were unaffected by the light rain, as he moved the ball cleanly around the ground.
Both teams struggled at impacting the score board in the third, with poor kicking going inside 50 costing Peel multiple opportunities, as they went into the final quarter with a two-point lead.
Liam Henry continued to build in the final quarter, with his pace along the wing causing headaches for Subiaco as he moved the ball out of the backline and set up Peel inside 50.
Inaccuracy looked like it would come back to haunt Peel as Subiaco challenged them late in the quarter, however, Peel’s kicking improved when it mattered, enjoying an even spread of ten individual goal kickers for the game.
Lloyd Meek was influential around the ground with 38 hitouts, 22 disposals and five marks, with his ruck-work giving the Peel midfield first use of the football.
Mitch Crowden (30 disposals) and Darcy Tucker (27 disposals) were the main beneficiaries, with both players also tallying a game-high six inside 50s.
Josh Treacy was also influential with his support in the ruck with 21 hitouts, to go along with his 13 disposals and six marks.
Peel will be hoping to build on Saturday's win when they take on the Perth Demons next Saturday at Mineral Resources Park at 2:10pm.
