On his arrival at Fremantle, Reece Conca found himself training harder than he ever had before.
The 26-year-old, who on Thursday was announced as a new member of Fremantle’s leadership group, said he’s been motivated by wanting to set an example to a young playing group.
The former Tiger is yet to play for Fremantle after spending eight years at Richmond and is excited to have the chance to set an example in his first season at his new club.
“I feel personally that my training standards have lifted since I arrived at Fremantle,” Conca said.
“I’ve been trying to really drive that and especially with such a young group, it’s about imparting what I’ve learnt over my eight years. It’s definitely something I’ve been looking to drive going forward.
“I didn’t really expect the leadership role formally but it’s something I’ve strived for my whole career.”
Conca said he’s especially excited to see what top-five draftees Andrew Brayshaw and Adam Cerra can bring to Fremantle in the future.
“Adam was a bit of a Richmond fan growing up so I've found him following me around,” joked Conca.
“They (Adam and Andrew) are both incredible young men, very talented but also very driven, so they’re going to be incredible for the future of this club.
“It’s good that we can start developing that as soon as possible.”
Conca said he’s hopeful to build on playing 18 games in 2018 after a number of injury-affected seasons in the AFL.
“I feel like everything is coming into place nicely,” Conca said.
“I’ve had some bad luck in parts through injury but I feel like I’m in a really good space physically, mentally and emotionally.
“I’m looking forward to a really good year and I have no doubt we’re going to have some success here.”
