Senior coach Ross Lyon says Richmond’s clearance work was simply too good in Sunday’s game and a major factor in Fremantle’s 27-point defeat.

The Tigers have generated a score from stoppages at a 12.2 per cent strike rate this season, the best in the AFL.

Damien Hardwick’s side was at it again on Sunday, booting 5.6 to Freo’s three behinds, a stat Lyon said was telling.

“They’re the number one clearance team for and against in the AFL and that’s how it ended up… they pantsed us around the stoppages,” he said.

“It was really our clearance work and, at the end of the day, we were beaten in the midfield.”

Lyon said his side overused the handball and had also failed to capitalise when chances presented.

“I thought we were in the game at half time,” he said.

“Their pressure was pretty good but I thought we just missed some golden opportunities.

“Also, some simple turnover goals, a 50m penalty, a hands in the back (free-kick against).”

Fremantle has a six-day break before fronting up to Patersons Stadium this Saturday night against a buoyant Adelaide side that knocked off top-two team Geelong.

The 11th-placed Crows, who sit two games and percentage outside the eight, are unlikely to regain injured star midfielder Patrick Dangerfield.

Adelaide forward Matthew Wright, who booted four goals including the match-winner in a thrilling two-point win over high-flying Geelong, told afc.com.au the Crows’ morale was high heading to Perth.
"We really needed a win, confidence is a massive thing," Wright said.
"This should give us plenty going forward and we'll go over to Fremantle and really take it to them."
