Champion Freo defender Luke McPharlin believes Sunday’s match against new AFL team Greater Western Sydney will not be easy despite the Giants recent hidings.

Kevin Sheedy’s youngsters have suffered blowout 162 and 119 points defeats at the hands of top four sides Hawthorn and Adelaide respectively in the past fortnight.

But McPharlin was adamant every side had to be treated with respect in an elite competition and said Freo wasn’t looking beyond Sunday’s challenge.

“There are no easy victories at this level,” he said ahead of Freo’s first ever match against the Giants.

“We take on a team that we have to get our head around.

“We’ll be looking to win that game and play as hard as we can. We can’t really look beyond that at this point.”

The defender refused to label the Giants as easy beats.

“I don’t think they are,” McPharlin said.

“There are no easy beats.

“I’ve been in this competition long enough to know that if you come 10 per cent off your game, you can really get stung.

“We will be training very hard this week and focusing on how we will want to play and, hopefully, deliver the win on Sunday.”

With Jonathon Patton a confirmed non-starter, McPharlin is likely to play on talented GWS forward Jeremy Cameron on Sunday.
