Fremantle defender Garrick Ibbotson says Fremantle's away form this season gives it confidence heading into next Saturday's massive challenge against Collingwood at the MCG.

The club has already tasted success in Melbourne against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium and Richmond at the MCG in 2012.

"We take confidence going over, playing Richmond at the MCG and then beating St Kilda earlier in the season," Ibbotson said.

"We do have confidence going over to play at the MCG. That's the big stage and that's where we need to be playing well."

Ibbotson said the Magpies would be another huge test for Fremantle under Ross Lyon.

"They had a fantastic win over West Coast," he said of the Pies nail-biting three-point win over the Eagles in one of the games of the season.

"That looked like a really hard game."

Ibbotson said Freo had to take the positives from Saturday's loss to Essendon and build from them to match it with Collingwood.

"It's an effort thing for us," he said.

"We have to play like we did on the weekend. That three-quarter effort, if we do it for four quarters, it's going to go a long way."

The 24-year-old also said Freo could take heart from the way the side was beginning to execute Ross Lyon's game plan.

"Thing are starting to work now," he said.

"Ross' game plan - we're all starting to understand, so we can take positives out of that.

"We're starting to come together."

Fremantle could possibly regain some key players for the Collingwood clash, including Stephen Hill and Zac Dawson, while Hayden Ballantyne will return following his one-game suspension.

But Ibbotson said the way some of the inclusions have played in recent weeks was a promising sign of the club's depth.

Nick Lower was one player who made an impact, collecting 30 disposals and eight tackles against the Bombers in his first game of the season.

"I think it was fantastic for Nick to come out and play the way he did," Ibbotson said.

"That's what he does, he gets in and under and wins the ball.

"It's good to know that we can have 'Lowy' come in and play that way.

"We got 'Hilly' and a few other guys to come back soon, too, hopefully.

"Some of our younger guys are also playing well. Hayden Crozier's playing well and Jesse Crichton's been good for us."
