On Sunday at Marvel Stadium, Matthew Taberner achieved something no Fremantle player has done in 10 years by kicking four goals in a quarter.
His 7.0 was a career-high for Taberner in his 106th AFL game, with four of his goals coming in a third term blitz where Freo kicked six goals to Essendon’s none on the way to a 48-point win.
This was the 11th time a Fremantle player scored four goals or more in a quarter, and the first time in 10 years, when Matthew Pavlich kicked four in the opening term against GWS in 2012.
Only one player has kicked five goals in a term, with Tony Modra kicking five in the second quarter against Melbourne on his way to a Club-record 10 goal haul.

Taberner’s haul of 7.0 was just the second time a player has kicked perfectly on the way to scoring seven goals or more.
While Modra is the only player to kick 10 in a game, Pavlich holds the honour for the most accurate day out kicking 9.0 against Carlton in 2005 at the MCG.
It’s in contrast to Modra’s 7.7 against Richmond in 2000 and John Hutton’s 8.5 against Sydney at the WACA in 1995.

In Monday night’s edition of AFL360, Fox Footy host Mark Robinson made Taberner his ‘Monday Hero’, saying the 28-year-old has been underrated in the past few years.
“Fremantle are sitting second on the ladder right now, it was a terrific game from them on the road and they blew Essendon apart. Matt Taberner was sitting at one end kicking seven goals,” Robinson said.
“He’s been a really good player for several years now, he doesn’t get the kudos he deserves. He’s a top-level key forward with seven goals in a game of AFL football. He deserves it and Fremantle deserve all the accolades that they’re getting.”
