This Saturday night, Fremantle will wear a special jumper honouring the 20th anniversary of the annual Starlight Purple Haze Game, proudly supported by South32.

Fremantle’s first ever annual Starlight Purple Haze match was played in 2003 on 2 August against Richmond at Subiaco Oval.

Since then, the match has become a marquee event in the calendar looked forward to each year by the club, the players and fans alike.

To commemorate the 20 year milestone, the players will wear a special edition tribute jumper.

The jumper houses 20 Starlight Stars to represent the 20 years in which Fremantle has held a Starlight Purple Haze Game. The middle chevron of Fremantle’s home jumper has been replaced with 19 of these stars, with the 20th placed at the heart of the jumper. In addition to the stars, the usual purple trim on the neck and arms of the jumper has been replaced by a trim of Starlight yellow.

The first ever annual Starlight Purple Haze jumper saw Fremantle switch up their usual Purple, Red and Green anchor jumper for an entirely purple jumper with a white anchor design.

This jumper was represented on the day by a host of familiar faces including Peter Bell who captained the side, Justin Longmuir and a host of club legends in Matthew Pavlich, Shaun McManus, Aaron Sandilands, Jeff Farmer, Luke McPharlin and more.

Worn until 2010, some memorable clashes in the first Starlight Purple Haze jumper included a big win over Hawthorn in round 18 2006 where Peter Bell had 29 disposals and Justin Longmuir kicked four goals, as well as a round 1, 56-point win over Adelaide in 2010 with huge contributions from Luke McPharlin who had 29 disposals and 14 marks, and David Mundy who had 28 disposals and a goal.

In 2011, Fremantle Dockers underwent a full Club rebrand introducing the all purple and chevrons jumper design.

This was the year representing the Starlight star on the jumper was debuted, with it becoming an addition to the usual home jumper to be worn on the annual Starlight Purple Haze match each subsequent year.

Fremantle fans will remember many incredible moments in these jumpers, from Matthew Pavlich’s jaw dropping soccer off the ground goal that delivered Fremantle the win against reigning premiers Geelong in round 1 2012, to the Clubs second ever game at Optus Stadium where Nat Fyfe dominated the Suns with 38 disposals, 8 tackles and a goal in round 3 2018.

This jumper has been worn every year post rebrand up until last year in the 19th annual Starlight Purple Haze game where Fremantle paid tribute to passionate Fremantle fan and Starlight Star Milli Lucas, who sadly passed away at age 14 after a long battle with cancer. The theme of the jumper was forever 14 and was drawn and designed by Milli’s siblings Tess and Joel.

A limited run of 20-year commemorative Starlight Purple Haze guernseys are now available for pre-order. They retail at $150 each with $50 per purchase going to the Starlight Children’s Foundation.
