Max Duffy’s day started like any other.

He went to work.

“I’m a tree lopper, there were still trees to be cut,” he said.

By the end of Duffy’s day, he was an AFL player after Fremantle drafted the 19-year-old with the 39th selection in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft.

Duffy has wanted to play AFL for as long as he can remember, since the days he watched his favourite player, Wayne Carey, dominate football games in the 90s.

“I’ve wanted this my whole life,” he said

“I grew up playing and watching footy. My favourite player was Wayne Carey, so growing up watching him play made me love the game.”

Duffy spent 2012 playing in East Fremantle’s league side, where he kicked 33 goals in 15 games.

He’s ecstatic to stay in Fremantle.

“I’m really, really happy,” he said.

“Just staying in WA is great news. I was hoping Fremantle would pick me up, so I’m just so happy.”

Freo’s draft crew didn’t help Duffy’s nerves on the night, taking its time discussing picks 36, which it selected Victorian Tanner Smith with, and 39.

“They were having a bit of a discussion and I was just hoping they were talking about me,” Duffy said.

“I was very nervous.

“There was no guarantees I’d be drafted and just not knowing was killing me.

“I’m very happy now, obviously.”

Max Duffy has a new job to arrive to every day now. There might not be any trees to be cut, but there's lots of work to be done.
