With a 5-0 record, Fremantle have every reason to only think about the present, continuing their unbeaten run with a six-point win against the Western Bulldogs at VU Whitten Oval on Tuesday.

But debutants Amy Franklin and Mikayla Morrison showed that the future is also bright, playing important roles in the tight contest.

A versatile tall forward / defender, Franklin stole the show in the second term with back-to-back goals as she helped Freo build a two-goal lead while kicking into the wind.

Morrison played a small but important role in Ebony Antonio’s match-winner, with a skilful handball over the top to first-year player Airlie Runnalls, who sent the ball forward to Antonio’s advantage.

That handball was one of Morrison’s eight possessions, while also contributing five tackles for the night.

Antonio praised the pair post-game.

“It was pretty special for Amy to get two goals in her debut game, it’s something she can look back on in the next few days,” Antonio said.

“It was an awesome job by Amy Franklin and ‘Morro’ as well in the forward line.

“We just had glimpses of what they’re capable of and they’re going to be future stars in the years to come.”

Antonio praised the midfield for their efforts, with Kiara Bowers (20 disposals, 12 tackles), Hayley Miller (18 disposals, seven tackles) and Gabby O’Sullivan (13 disposals, eight tackles) continuing their impressive seasons.

Skilful defender Laura Pugh also stood out to Antonio, standing tall in the absence of Janelle Cuthbertson and getting a crucial fingernail onto a goal attempt from Kirsty Lamb to prevent a late Bulldogs goal.

“It was the usual players, Miller and ‘Turbo’ (Bowers) fought inside really hard today and Gabby O’Sullivan running through there as well,” Antonio said.

“Our midfield has been top notch and it was a real grind for them, but our backline was sensational. I thought Laura Pugh held us up down back, she did a sensational job today.”

Antonio expects senior coach Trent Cooper to make a number of changes for Fremantle’s clash against North Melbourne at North Hobart Oval on Sunday.

“We’re not used to these short breaks but after today’s game and previous game against Collingwood, I’m starting to get used to the four day turnaround,” Antonio said.

“We’ve got a lot of younger girls in the team and we have huge depth, so it gives Trent the opportunities to rest girls and give them fresh legs.

“A lot of girls missed out today but they’ll come in ready next week, we’re ready for Tasmania.”
