Versatile forward Michael Apeness has signed a one-year contract extension that will see him at Fremantle until at least the end of the 2019 season.
The signing comes on what has been a promising year for the 23-year-old.
Multiple knee injuries saw Apeness spend a significant stint on the sidelines in 2017 and early 2018.

There were 644 days separating his seventh and eighth game in the AFL, with Apeness making his long-awaited return in round 11 against Collingwood.
“It’s really good to sign on,” Apeness said.
“I’ve obviously had a few injuries over my first couple of years but it’s great to be playing footy in the seniors at the moment and I’m glad the club signed me on.”
Since making his return, Apeness has played five consecutive games as he looks to lock down a spot in Fremantle’s best 22.
The highlight of his season so far has been singing the Freo song for the first time in almost two years after a thrilling win in round 12 against Adelaide.
“It’s good getting back in the purple jumper and having a crack with the boys on the field,” Apeness said.
“Playing at home against Adelaide…to get the win there and sing the song in the rooms was a great feeling.”
Apeness’ return from injury for Fremantle has been vital, with the 201cm big man capable of performing a number of roles.
Fremantle’s ruck and forward stocks have been tested this year with injuries to the likes of ruckmen Aaron Sandilands and Sean Darcy as well as key forward Matt Taberner.
“For most of my career I’ve been a forward but (the coaches) see me more as a forward/ruck,” Apeness said.
“It’s good that I can add that rucking ability to my game.
“Obviously, I’m reasonably tall so just being able to build my ruck craft as well as playing forward, can help the team.
“I haven’t done much ruck work in the first couple of years so I’m just trying to build that into my game.”
Apeness is one of a number of developing tall forwards at the club.
Taberner (25) leads the group with Apeness among a number of young forwards including Cam McCarthy (23), round 12 Rising Star nominee Brennan Cox (20) and Hugh Dixon (19).
“Our young forwards are going really well,” Apeness said.
“Coxy’s clunking marks. Hugh Dixon’s had a few injuries but he’s a real talent and a good set shot and mark.
“Tabs played great footy to start the year. He had that foot injury but when he gets back in the team he’ll be up and firing.”
On top of looking for a strong finish to the season, Apeness said he was hopeful to benefit from a full pre-season as preparation for a big year in 2019.
“I just want to keep improving, play my role for the team and, hopefully, we can get some wins,” Apeness said.
“A big pre-season obviously helps with the fitness so I’ll definitely be trying to improve my footy for this year and then go into next year and just try to get that really good base in my fitness.”
