It’s not hard for Aaron Sandilands’ kids to look up to their 211cm father, but for the star ruckman’s three daughters, he says there are plenty of Freo Dockers setting an example.
Attending the Fremantle AFLW jumper presentation with his family on Friday, Sandilands spoke about how the AFLW team inspired him, his teammates and his daughters.
“What you girls are doing at the moment, not only are you working full time or studying, but then you rock up to training, the men’s team notice the fact that after hours you’re rocking up and we’re the lucky ones we get to go home and knock off, “ Sandilands said.
“To us, that’s really inspiring and we really wish you all the best for the footy season because we see how much hard work you guys put in and no doubt you will have a great year.
“I’ve got three girls of my own and the pathway and example you are setting not only for the community but for my three girls – who are now mad Freo women’s supporters, is great.”
With 11 AFLW players about to receive their Fremantle jumper for the first time, Sandilands spoke of what it meant to him to pull on the purple guernsey.
“The first time you get presented the jumper is a really special moment,” Sandilands said.
“I think a lot of the hard work that you put into your career before you get to that point, it’s such a great reward to be able to achieve that and get that goal you’ve been striving for, for such a long period of time.
“I really love the concept the club has bought in where you have someone special today to present you with that jumper, cherish the moment because you will never forget it, it’s one of the greatest achievements of your sporting career.”
Fremantle start their season in round one against Melbourne at Casey Fields on Sunday 3 February.
Their first home game is the following week at Fremantle Oval against Brisbane on Sunday 10 February, and Sandilands said he’ll be there to cheer them on.
“All the best for the season, the men’s side is right behind you,” Sandilands said.
“We can't wait to see your run out and we’ll be right behind having a look when you play your first game in Freo. We are all behind you, the whole club is behind you so it’s an exciting time.”
