New Fremantle draftee Sam Sturt is taking inspiration from Nat Fyfe this pre-season, with Sturt seeing the Freo captain as a personification of what can be achieved through hard work in the AFL.
Fyfe has transformed himself since joining Fremantle as a skinny 18-year-old in 2010 and many have drawn parallels between Sturt and the young Fyfe.
Both Fyfe and Sturt arrived at Fremantle weighing in the mid-seventies and Fyfe has since built himself into a 92kg big-bodied midfielder.
Sturt is currently staying with Fyfe as he finds his feet in WA and the no.17 selection is enjoying his time with the Freo skipper.
“He’s been really generous and he’s really funny so that’s something I didn’t expect. He’s a super genuine and nice person,” Sturt said.
“He’s showed me a few videos of him when he first came to Freo and he’s definitely (at a standard) that I aim to get to if I put in a lot of hard work.”
Sturt, who was selected as a general forward from the Dandenong Stingrays, said he expected an eye-opening introduction to training at AFL level.
“It’s been really hard but also really enjoyable,” Sturt said.
“I’ve loved every minute of it and I’m looking forward to the rest of the pre-season.
“I expected it to be this hard. It’s been a lot more ball involved which has been really good, while the running we’ve done has been pretty hard.”
Fremantle is currently training on the Gold Coast for a one-week camp to bond as a group and learn the gameplan for the upcoming season.
Temperatures reached 30 degrees with high humidity during Monday morning’s session.
“Obviously it’s really hot up here,” Sturt said.
“It was a great session this morning out with the boys and it was pretty hard. There will be an ice bath now to recover.
“I think the vibe is really good. This morning at breakfast everyone was gelling as a team and really getting around everyone.
“Everyone is eating together and doing everything together. I think we have a few more team dinners to come so it should be good for bonding.”
