Peel Thunder have lost to East Fremantle by four goals in a low-scoring affair in windy conditions at East Fremantle Oval.
A shaky start in front of goal came at a price for Peel, who kicked nine behinds before converting their first major, as they went down 4.13 (37) to 8.13 (61).
Fremantle Ruckman Scott Jones said the Thunder’s inability to run out the game cost them in the end.
“It was always going to be difficult in these conditions, especially with East Fremantle’s pretty experienced list, they were always going to jump us,” he said.
“I think at times we were alright, but it was the four-quarter effort that we struggled with and it’s something we’re working on.”
Harley Bennell took another step towards returning to the AFL, collecting 16 disposals and a goal from only 70 minutes in the midfield.
Jones said Bennell’s skill and football intelligence stood out to him.
“Every time he touches the ball he’s got the opportunity to do something special with it,” he said.
“If he can get through as many games as possible then who knows what he can do.”
Fremantle rookie Stefan Giro continued his solid WAFL form, backing up last week’s 27-disposal effort with another best-on-ground performance, collecting 34 possessions.
“He’s doing very well,” Jones said.
“Just his pressure, even when we’re down he’s still working, still pressuring off the back of the stoppage and keeping himself involved, it’s something he really prides himself on.”
Young defender Griffin Logue returned from a foot injury and collected 11 disposals from limited game time.
“He’s always a bit of excitement, especially off that backline he creates a bit of a spark for us, which we needed at times.”
Taylin Duman staked his claim for a return to the AFL side with 25 touches, while Michael Apeness had a strong game with 32 hit-outs and a goal.
Peel will face Claremont at 2.15pm next Saturday 2 June at Claremont Oval.
