Alex Pearce is yet to be told if he will go head-to-head with high-flying Gold Coast star Tom Lynch on Saturday at Optus Stadium, however the defender understands the task of shutting down a dangerous forward doesn’t rest solely on one man’s shoulders.
Lynch was rampant against Carlton at Etihad Stadium on Saturday, kicking 8.1 on the way to the Suns’ 34-point win.
On Saturday, any of Fremantle’s three tall defenders in Pearce, Joel Hamling or Michael Johnson could get the role on Lynch.
“Gold Coast are coming off some good form so it’s going to be a good game,” Pearce said.
“(Lynch is) among the best players in the game.
It will be a big challenge but whether I get him or not, we’ll see.
“I played on him once before, he’s obviously a big strong boy. He’s very athletic and he’s a fierce competitor as well which I like. It would make it a good contest if I get him.”
The 22-year-old highlighted Freo’s 16-point win against the Bombers in round two, where a team-defence mindset helped Pearce keep Essendon star Joe Daniher goalless.
"As we saw from the weekend it’s important that we get some good pressure up the field," Pearce said.
“Our mids really work hard and that makes our job as defenders a lot easier.
“I think we played as a unit really well on the weekend, rolled off and supported each other. I think everyone did their role in the back six.”
Pearce said he approaches every opponent differently, a strategy that also paid off round one, limiting Port Adelaide’s Charlie Dixon to one goal.
“I wanted to play (Daniher) with a bit more body than what I did against Dixon the week before,” Pearce said.
“There’s always little nuances against opponents, different things I like to do. The way the ball comes in for each team is different in how they deliver it to the forwards.”
“I haven’t studied Gold Coast yet but that will be something I’ll work through and try and make a plan relevant to who I’m playing on.”
Saturday’s game will be Fremantle’s second of four games at Optus Stadium in a five week period.
The Gold Coast clash is an historic ‘away’ fixture and will celebrate Fremantle’s annual Purple Haze Game.
