Fremantle’s AFL womens team have finished the 2018 season on a high after defeating Carlton by 11 points at Fremantle Oval on Saturday.
Amy Lavell played an outstanding last game for the club converting two goals of her own and finishing up with 11 disposals to end the game 9.5(59) to 6.12(48).
Fremantle played their highest scoring game for the season in front of over 2500 people, and Lavell said it was a great way for the girls to finish the game and the season.
“It’s definitely the way I wanted to go out,” Lavell said.
“To finish with a win, and finish like this makes the season worth it too.”
A close first quarter saw Fremantle secure a two-point lead with captain Kara Donnellan scoring the first major of the game and Lavell converting soon after.
Lavell praised all the girls for their contribution saying they all played a superb match.
“I think there was a pretty solid contribution from everyone,” Lavell said.
“I think the midfield did fantastic, they’d been getting the ball out… the girls really rallied around and stepped up for each other.”
Fremantle's defensive half worked hard to keep the pressure on Carlton in the second term, dominating the visiting side in both the tackle count and disposals, finishing just two points behind.
The third term saw a fiery contested game as both teams fought hard to take control, with Fremantle leading the charge finishing on top by three points.
Lavell said that despite it being an emotionally charged quarter the girls regained composure to secure the lead.
“I think we lost our way a little bit in the third quarter and just let our emotions get the better of us,” Lavell said.
“Once we calmed down and realised we could win the contest we knew it was ours to take, so we took it.”
The girls came back ferociously in the fourth term to dominate the quarter with three unanswered goals.
Lavell said it was exciting to see the girls fight hard in the last quarter to win the game.
“Its pretty exciting to get the win, and pretty exciting for the girls to finish the game the way they did,” Lavell said.
“Its great to get around the girls when they're scoring as well, we kicked a few goals in the end so it was very exciting and great to be part of it.”
