Fremantle have secured Nathan Wilson from the GWS Giants after a trade that will see the Giants receive Freo’s future second round draft pick in the 2018 NAB AFL National Draft.
The deal also includes a swap of fourth round draft picks, with GWS receiving Fremantle’s pick 57 and Fremantle receiving the Giant’s pick 71 in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft.
The 24-year-old Peel product has agreed to terms for a four-year contract, seeing him play in purple until the end of season 2021.
Fremantle general manager of list management Brad Lloyd said the club was looking forward to seeing Wilson return home to WA and continue his career at Freo.
“Nathan’s a very talented young West Australian who has progressed strongly through his time at GWS to be a high level player,” Lloyd said.
“We really like his elite speed and rebound off halfback and he has a high level of ability to kick the ball over long distances.”
“His qualities and attributes will be a great addition to our team.”
Wilson was pre-listed by the Giants as a 17-year-old in 2010 and made his debut in Round 1, 2012 in the inaugural game for GWS against the Swans at the SCG.
Drafted as a small forward, Wilson moved to the Giants defence in season 2015, where he cemented his spot as a regular in the GWS backline.
The elite rebounding defender played 24 of a possible 25 games for the Giants in 2017, notching up 77 career games over six seasons.
A stand out of Wilson’s game is his run-and-carry, with the speedy defender ranked second in the AFL for total metres gained behind Richmond’s Dustin Martin, averaging over 500m per match in 2017.
The paperwork is being lodged with the AFL.
