Fremantle’s Hayley Miller is looking forward to some friendly banter between herself and Fremantle captain Kara Donnellan in Saturday’s NAB AFL Women’s State of Origin match between Victoria and the Allies at Etihad Stadium.
Miller will play alongside Freo teammates Dana Hooker, Kirby Bentley and Ebony Antonio for the Allies, with Fremantle marquee player Kara Donnellan representing Victoria.
“I think there’ll be a bit of banter out there for sure,” Miller said to RTRFM on Thursday morning.
“It’ll be really exciting to be under the Allies coach (Bec Goddard), someone I haven’t experienced as a coach before, so I’m definitely very excited to learn off her.
“Coming into the team a bit late, I’ll be getting to know girls that I haven’t played with before, which will be a great experience.”
Miller replaces Brisbane Lions All Australian Sam Virgo in the Allies line up, who was injured playing for Yeronga South Brisbane in the QWAFL Grand Final against Coorparoo last weekend.
“There was only a very slim chance that I’d get to play,” Miller said.
“I got the call on Monday morning saying there was a chance I’d get to play the State of Origin match because there were a few injuries over last weekend.
“Around the afternoon it was confirmed.
“It all happened pretty quickly.”
The match at Etihad will be a familiar setting for Miller, who previously played for Melbourne in the AFLW exhibition match in 2016.
“Etihad is one of my favourite grounds to play at, so it’s really exciting that I get the chance to play there again,” Miller said.
“It’s going to be a great spectacle with free entry and with no other football on the weekend.
“Hopefully, we get a good turn out.”
